Description

About the artist:

Maqbool Fida Husain (born 1915, in Padharpur, Maharashtra, India) was the best known Indian Artist of twentieth century and a founding member of ‘The Progressive Artist Group of Bombay.’ He was also known for his drawings and his work as a printmaker, photographer, and filmmaker. Husain enjoyed depicting the lively and free spirit of horses in many of his narrative paintings executed in cubist style. He depicted the icons of Indian culture, through the ages, seeking to capture the quintessence of his subjects, like Mohandas K. Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the British Raj, and motifs of Indian urban and rural life. Husain is known for his emphatic understanding of the human situation and the way he quickly translates this in paint. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1973 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1989, both prestigious civilian awards. M F Husain passed away in London in 2011.
